Boost Your Air Conditioner’s Efficiency

Hot days can be murder on your monthly bills, as you run your air conditioner constantly to hold back the heat and pay much higher monthly bills accordingly. Avon, OH is too warm in the summer to cut down on your AC usage—high heat can present an active danger to your health in many cases—but you shouldn’t have to pay an arm and a leg just because you don’t want your home to feel like a Turkish bath.

Luckily, there are ways to boost your air conditioner‘s efficiency. Some of them you’re likely aware of: setting your temperature to 78°F instead of 75°F, for example, or dressing in lightweight clothes around the house. But if you’re a little more ambitious, there’s things you can do to lower those bills without skimping on a comfortable home. We’ve listed a few of them below.

Use Your Thermostat Wisely

Most homes in the area have programmable thermostats, though they’re not always used as effectively as they could be. For example, many people know that it takes far more energy to start up the air conditioner than to simply keep it running, and therefore usually turn it on in the morning before they go to work and let it run all day. This is a big mistake: the energy used to cool an empty house for eight hours or more far outweigh the fractional additional cost of turning the system on at 5:00 p.m. instead of 7:00 a.m. Instead, use your programmable thermostat to turn the air on twenty minutes before you normally arrive home.

Install a Dehumidifier

Air conditioners have to work harder when humidity levels are high, and here in Ohio, they’re high all the time in the summer. A dehumidifier will get rid of that excess moisture and ease the strain on your air conditioner, helping the house feel cooler for less as well as discouraging the growth of mold and bacteria.
