How to Identify if Your Air Conditioning System Needs Repairs

Water Heaters - Westland HVAC + Plumbing

As spring begins to wind down and summer gets closer, it’s important to make sure that your air conditioning system is prepared for the hot season. Part of those preparations includes getting your system the repairs that it needs to keep up with increased demand. Air conditioner problems are progressive in nature. The longer they are left to develop, the worse they are going to get. A quick response to repair needs is key to keeping your air conditioning system in good condition. With that in mind, here are a couple of the best ways to identify if your air conditioning system needs repairs.

Odd Sounds

If you’ve had your air conditioner for any appreciable length of time, you probably know what it’s supposed to sound like. If you start to notice unusual sounds coming from your air conditioner, it’s almost never a good sign. One of the most common odd noises to signal a problem is that of something grinding in the system. This is the bearings in the air handler motor wearing down. If the bearings are not replaced quickly, the motor will overheat and burn itself out. At that point, it will need to be replaced.

Ice

Air conditioners are designed to remove heat from the home, but they are absolutely not supposed to be creating sub-freezing temperatures. If you notice ice forming on your air conditioner, it’s probably the result of a dirty evaporator coil. A dirty evaporator coil will malfunction and freeze the condensate that forms on it during normal operation. This causes it to ice over, preventing it from siphoning heat from the home’s air. If you see ice anywhere on your air conditioner, call a professional to examine it.
