Dispelling Myths About Your Air Conditioner

Air conditioners are a staple of most homes here in Fairview Park, OH, and with summer coming our way, people will be using theirs more and more often. That’s why it can be difficult when myths and misconceptions about air conditioners result in wasted energy and increased strain on the systems. People may think they’re using their system wisely, but following the wrong path can force you to spend more than you should to keep your home cool this summer. Here are some common myths about your air conditioner that we’d like to dispel.

Lowering the Thermostat Setting Won’t Cool Your Home Faster

When people first turn on their air conditioner, they often set the thermostat to a lower temperature than they want in the belief that it will make the air that comes out of the AC cooler. The system doesn’t work that way. Air conditioners produce cool air at the same temperature whenever they’re running. The thermostat merely determines how long the system will run before shutting off. Setting a lower temperature simply forces your system to expend unnecessary energy. Set the temperature you want your home to be and leave the system to do its job. It will save you more than you think.

Repairing an Old System Might Cost You More Than Replacing It

If you have an air conditioner that is more than 10 or 12 years old and it runs into trouble, you may be tempted to simply get it fixed rather than replacing it. This can be a dangerous trap. Older systems are usually much less efficient, and repairs will grow more frequent as time goes on. Replacing a worn AC with a new one may involve more of an up-front cost, but when you factor in the improved efficiency and lack of repairs, it may end up saving you a great deal of money in the long run.
