Watch Out for Low Air Flow

With summer all but here in Westlake, OH, it pays to keep a close eye on your air conditioner for any signs of unusual activity. Generally speaking, if the system behaves unexpectedly for any reason, it usually signals some sort of a problem that could lead to a serious breakdown if you don’t address it. This can include both obvious signs of trouble and subtle ones, though the subtle ones require more careful attention to detail in order to catch.

Take the issue of low air flow for instance. On the surface, it doesn’t sound like much. But it can have a devastating impact on your air conditioning system if you allow it to continue. Low air flow means that your house isn’t being cooled as quickly as you might like, which means the air conditioning is working harder than it should. By extension, that translates to higher bills and an increased risk of repairs, to say nothing of the kind of damage that can be inflicted if cool air builds up inside the system and damages internal components. This issues only tends to get worse the longer the situation goes on.

Causes

Possible causes are numerous, but most of them require the attention of a skilled technician to address. They include, but are not limited to:

  • Blockages in the ducts restricting air flow (this is likely the case if only some of the vents in your home are affected).
  • Breaches in the ducts pulling air out of the system.
  • A clogged filter, which can be fixed simply by changing or cleaning the filter (you can do this yourself in most cases).
  • A problem with the fan, fan belt or fan motor.
  • Electrical connection problems interfering with the system’s power.

When you spot low air flow in your air conditioner, turn it off and call the pros at Westland Heating and Air immediately!
