Can a Heating System Be Too Powerful?

It doesn’t sound quite right, does it? An overpowered heating system? How is that possible? We tend to think of bigger as better, and in some cases, that might be true. But it is actually possible for a heating system to be too powerful, and in many ways that’s just as bad as a heating system that isn’t powerful enough. Here in Avon, OH, with the winters long and cold, that can end up costing you a lot.

Short Cycling

Heating systems tend to use much more power when they turn on and turn off than they do simply running. The fan motor needs energy to charge up, but once it’s running the electricity required is much less than that first kick requires. That’s why you generally want your heater to run at least fifteen minutes at a clip in order to get the highest efficiency out of your system.

When the system heats your home too quickly, however, the heater will turn off too soon, then back on again quickly as the air cools down. The process is known as short cycling, and as you may imagine, it can take a huge toll on your heater. Key components will wear out much faster than they should, and you’ll end up paying more for your heat than is necessary.

Get It Sized

Unfortunately, the only time to really do something about heater power levels is when you’re first installing the system. That’s why it’s so important for a trained professional to examine your home carefully, measure the square footage and perform similar functions to know exactly how much power your system needs to keep you warm. That ensures your heart is neither too large nor too small but just right.
