Watch for Problems with Your Boiler

With September comes fall weather here in Bay Village, OH, and that means your heating system will soon be called upon to keep your home warm day in and day out. This is a good time to run your system for a period and check for any problems that may occur, especially with boilers, which a number of local households use. The sooner you can spot a serious issue, the more time you’ll have to schedule a repair service. But if you’re not a professional, how do you know what to look for? Proper diagnosis requires a trained technician, it’s true, but you can still spot general signs that something is wrong on your own.

Strange Noises

Strange noises can be caused by leaks, clogs, problems with the pump, and any number of other issues. They’re defined as any noise that you don’t recognize as part of the system’s ordinary functions: groans, hums, whistles, and anything else that doesn’t sound normal.

Leaks

Sometimes, leaks are easy to spot: just check for puddles or moisture around the boiler. But other leaks are very small, allowing just tiny amounts of steam to escape. You can spot those by checking the boiler’s pressure gauge and seeing if it drops steadily. If it does, you likely have a leak in your system.

Sudden Shutdown

A shutdown isn’t a problem if your home is adequately heated. But a premature shutdown can mean a serious issue: low water pressure, problems with the pump, a clog in the system, and other, similar issues. If the system shuts down unexpectedly, check to ensure that the breaker switch hasn’t been triggered, then check the boiler’s controls to see if they’re properly set. If the problem repeats itself, it’s time to call in a professional.

If you spot any of these issues, shut your boiler off and call in the pros at Westland Heating and Air today!
