Drain Clogs: What’s the Biggest Culprit?

This is an interesting question to any experienced plumber in our area. Homeowners might look throughout the internet and come up with the idea that the biggest culprit for drain clogs is “hygiene products” or “food waste.” But what if your home doesn’t cook that often and you’re still getting clogs? Or what if your bathroom drains are fine, but your kitchen drains are the ones getting clogged up?

These are the scenarios that make answering this question so difficult. But we’re always down for a challenge!

Today we’re going to focus on sink plumbing in Bay Village, OH and some of the biggest culprits of drain clogs in our area. The answer to this big question depends greatly on your lifestyle, but we hope we can point you in the right direction. Just don’t forget to call us for drain cleaning services if you need them!

The Various Culprits of Drain Clogs

Let’s get into some of the more sinister culprits of a drain clog in your home.

Bathroom

  • Hair. Hair is one of the biggest culprits of a drain clog in the bathroom, just by how much of it our bodies produce. Strands of hair can get caught on pipes and drains and start pulling other materials like soap with them. Our team has solutions to get rid of hair if it’s causing you problems.
  • Toys. If you’ve got kids, then this probably sounds familiar. Kids might not understand how delicate their home’s plumbing system is, and unfortunately that toy is already out of reach down there.
  • Gels like toothpaste and hair cream. Gels can be a sticky and slightly-solid nightmare for a drain. Most of them will dissolve with hot water but some will remain persistant.

Kitchen

  • Food waste. The first and most unavoidable problem for your kitchen drains is food waste. After all, our kitchen sinks see the most food out of any other area in our kitchen, so it’s natural for food waste to cause clogs. Try to use a mesh screen to trap waste before it goes down the drain.
  • Shells, coffee grounds, packaging. Sometimes we can accidentally flush shells, coffee grounds, packaging, and other materials down the drain that we realize a second too late need to be thrown away. Don’t worry, this happens.
  • FOG (fats, oils, and greases). Fats, oils, and greases might seem like liquids you can flush down the drain. But these materials quickly solidify and cause clogging when they get into the plumbing system. Try wiping them up with a paper towel and dumping them in the trash.

Get Your Drain Cleaned by Professionals

Unfortunately, you can only make minor dents in a drain clog with things like a plunger or a drain snake. These types of solutions can take hours for homeowners to use, they often don’t work, and you’ll get more frustrated as time goes on. We don’t even want to get started on the ineffectiveness of drain cleaning chemicals!

Do yourself and your family a favor and call our team. We promise we can clear your drain out quickly and effectively, no questions asked!
