Signs That Your Water Heater Needs Repairs

Kitchen Plumbing - Westland HVAC + Plumbing

We rarely think about our water heaters, since they’re often tucked in an out-of-the-way part of the house and do their job quietly and without complaint. Trouble can always arise, however, especially if your system hasn’t been serviced in a while and/or you have an especially old water heater. Here in Westlake, OH, professionals can repair most problems with your water heater, but you need to be able to spot the signs that your water heater needs repairs before you can summon assistance. Here’s a few telltale signs to watch for.

  • Discolored Water: If there’s rust in your water or your system is showing signs of corrosion, it can affect the quality of the water coming out of your tap. If your water looks rusty or discolored, especially when you turn on the hot tap, you should definitely give the water heater a look.
  • Strange noises: If your water heater hasn’t been serviced in a while, then hard water deposits and other detritus can form build-up at the bottom of the tank. Water can make gurgling noises when it filters through these formations. You can also spot a problem with hissing or rumbling noises in the system: anything that doesn’t correspond to a sound you usually hear.
  • Leaks: Leaks can arise from anywhere in the system, but are especially troublesome when they appear around the water tank itself. It’s usually the sign of a breach, which means you’ll need to have the water cleaner replaced.
  • Lack of Hot Water: The most obvious sign that something is wrong is simply a lack of hot water: either water that refuses to get sufficiently warm or hot water that runs out abnormally quickly. If this happens, you should summon a plumber immediately.
